SKIN FOCUS: Oily Skin

November 6, 2009

This week, Skin Focus zooms in on oily skin and gives you all the information you need to know about the skin type.

The signs and symptoms

Oily skin is a common cutaneous problem and is the result of various skin dysfunctions. These skin dysfunctions result in a number of cutaneous symptoms: shiny skin, dull complexion, uneven skin texture, dilated pores, blocked pores or local outbreaks of blemishes.
  Shiny skin
Shiny skin

The shine on your skin is persistent and recurring. It is localized to a degree and reappears during the day.
“Even though I cleanse my skin thoroughly in the morning, it is shiny again after an hour or two.”

Cysts

Local outbreaks of blemishes

You have sudden and recurrent eruptions of blemishes in certain places.
“At the slightest hint of stress or fatigue, before and during my periods, or after being in the sun, I get blemishes.”Comedone

Uneven skin texture

You have a dull complexion, an uneven surface and blocked pores.
“My pores are blocked, which doesn’t look clean.”

Causes of oily skin

Oily skin occurs mainly due to hormones because sebum production is directly influenced by male hormones called androgens. Androgens are present in both males and females, but are higher in men. However it is not necessarily caused by a surplus of androgenic (male) hormones, as has long been believed. Androgen receptors located under the skin can also over-react to the hormones and bind too much while the level of hormones itself remains normal.

Shiny skin manifestationShiny skin

The underlying cause of oily skin is excessive sebum production by the sebaceous glands. This sebum accumulates on the surface of the skin and makes it look shiny. This condition can be exacerbated by external factors (UV rays, pollution, heat).

Blackhead manifestation

Uneven skin texture

An increased proliferation of the skin’s keratinocytes leads to an accumulation of dead cells on the surface: a keratinous plug forms and it becomes more difficult for the excess sebum to be eliminated. The blocked pores give the skin an uneven look.

Cysts manifestationLocal outbreaks of blemishes

When there is too much sebum in the skin, a kind of bacteria naturally present in the skin (Propionibacterium acnes) proliferates abnormally inside a blocked pore. This causes the sebum to be hydrolized into irritating fatty acids which can provoke reactions leading to the appearance of blemishes.

Aggravating factors

Genetics may play a part in determining skin type. It seems that some skin is programmed to be oily, while other skin is programmed to be dry. Stress and pollution also seem to have some responsibility for oily skin: local outbreaks of blemishes can be exacerbated by certain internal factors (menstrual cycles, stress, fatigue) and external factors (drugs, sun, unsuitable cosmetics). As for shine, this can be worsened by environmental factors (UV, pollution, etc).

Caring for oily skin

Oily skin is a delicate kind of skin for which you need appropriate, extremely gentle cleansers and treatments. Here are a few tips to help you to adopt a good daily skincare routine.

1. Cleanse and remove make-up gently

If you cleanse or exfoliate too harshly, your skin may react by producing extra sebum, making oiliness reappear more quickly. So give preference to mild, soap-free products with a physiological pH, which help remove dirt without irritating the skin.

2. Moisturize and control shine

It is a common misconception that oily skin does not require moisturizing. Oily skin produces too much sebum, not too much water. Therefore oily skin can suffer from dehydration too. It needs to have moisturizer applied every day, to make it supple and comfortable. Effective moisturizing will also help it to defend itself from external threats. However you should always choose a non-comedogenic product.

3. Transform your skin texture

Excessive sebum production can be accompanied by an irregular cell turnover. The dead cells then accumulate on the surface, resulting in blocked pores and the appearance of blemishes. It is advisable to use an exfoliating product with a high tolerance factor, so that you can perform a delicate, targeted, non-irritant and non-drying exfoliation to transform and smooth the texture of your skin.

4. Tackle local blemishes

Oily skin is prone to local outbreaks of blemishes which can occur at any moment. When they appear, don’t tamper with them because this could lead to permanent scars. Apply suitable treatments instead, to help to shrink them faster and stop them from leaving scars.

    Hi,

What can I do if I cannot re-cleanse my face? I have oily skin and it becomes oily very easily again even after washing.

    • November 10, 2009 10:29 am

      Hi Ming Lee,

It’s sufficient to cleanse your face twice a day, once in the morning and another at night. If your face becomes oily again, use a oil blotter or tissue gently on the face to absorb away the excess oil.

I’ve been having oily skin with congested pores for the longest time. Yet to find a brand/product which helps. My skin’s quite dehydrated at the same time. Sometimes i’m really confused if products for oily skin will be too harsh. I’m still searching for that one great moisturizer which helps to keep the shine at bay yet hydrate well at the same time.

Definitely keen to have a trial kit from the Effaclar range for oily skin! Thanks much!

      Hi Bella,

If your skin is oily and dehydrated at the same time, you can actually try another of our product from the Effaclar range, Effaclar H Compensating Soothing Moisturizer which soothes and intensely hydrates the skin. Effaclar M is great for its soothing and mattifying effect.

    Hi,

My face shows sign of dryness and oiliness at the same time. Most of the oiliness are at the forehead area and it makes it shiny and uneven tone with other parts of the face. I also have reoccuring pimple on top of that. I havent been able to find a suitable product for my face. I’ve tried other oily skin facials before but it leaves my face feeling tight after washing. I am also concern about skin whitening. Are there any facial that cleanses the oily skin, remove pimples from reoccuring and whitens at the same time?

What would be good to recommend to me? I would also love to get sample of your product to try.

    • November 19, 2009 10:32 am

      Hi Elfa,

Oily skin and pimples are often caused by overactive sebaceous glands excreting sebum excessively. To manage this problem, it is important to choose a good cleanser which can remove the excess oil without stripping the face of its essential oil, causing dryness. I’d recommend you to try Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel which, as mentioned, is a very gentle cleanser for the face with an almost-neutral pH value. It purifies the epidermis of impurities and promotes the elimination of excess sebum. The gel should clean your skin without leaving any taut feeling.

If you have congested skin, you can try Effaclar Duo which reduces inflammation and unclogs pores, without drying the skin in the process.

As for your other concern – whitening, we do not have any cleanser which has such triple functions. We do have a separate range for whitening, Mela-D White, which you may want to check out. You can read more about it from our “Products” section. However, I’d advise you to treat your pimples first before starting the whitening treatment.

I’ve emailed you details to redeem a free Effaclar sample kit. When you go down to our store counter, feel free to approach the Derma-Advisor on duty about your skin concerns. Being able to see your skin, they’ll be in a better position to diagnose your condition and recommend you the suitable products.

    Hi,

If I do not use moisturiser, my makeup wil flake. Yet if i do use moisturiser, my t-zone and checks becomes very oily. I also have occassional break-outs.
    Pls advice me.

    • November 19, 2009 4:44 pm

      Hi Kate,

It is important to adopt a proper skincare regime which comprises of cleansing, toning, moisturizing and sun protection. Moisturizing helps to keep the skin hydrated and supple. Bear in mind it has nothing to do with making the skin oily. If you have oily skin, it is advisable to choose a moisturizer which is light in texture so that it is easily absorbed and one that is non-comedogenic so that it does not clog up your pores and cause inflammation to arise thereafter. You can give Effaclar M Mattifying Moisturizer, a moisturizer which comes in a semi-fluid form that is easy on the skin and leaves a matt or no-shine look on the face after application.

Effaclar A.I. is useful to treat breakout/pimples. Just apply a thick coat of cream onto the pimple overnight and allow it to heal.

I’ve emailed you details to redeem a free Effaclar sample kit. When you go down to our store counter, feel free to approach our well-trained Derma-Advisor on duty about your skin concerns and listen to their advice.

        • December 14, 2009 9:28 am

          Hi Kate,

For Effaclar Duo, use it in place of your moisturizer. After you’ve cleansed and toned your face, apply a thin layer of Effaclar Duo over your face. If you’re using it in the morning, you can apply your sunscreen after Effaclar Duo.

          Cheers,

Hi, i have just recently bought the Effaclar M and been using it for few days, and i must say its the best moisturiser i have ever used. For oily skin like mine, effaclar M is the best remedy i must say. Been wanting to try the other Effaclar stuff as well, especially the ones for the acne treatment and the face wash. Hopefully, i can get a sample kit. Even if i dont get it, i would still be loyal fan of Effaclar. Cant wait to try the other stuff from Effaclar, its so far the best products for those with pore trouble. I mean how can it not be the best, when u can see its effects within less than a week. Its good, really :)

Just one query i have though. I have been using the ANTHELIOS 30spf, together with effaclar M. But is there any other sunscreen for oily skin that is more compatible with effaclar M, becoz i feel that anthelios, though good, seems to produce some white flakes which i have to remove using tissue after application, thanks.

    • November 19, 2009 6:26 pm

      Hi Ren,

We’re happy Effaclar M works for you! Do try the other products in the same range for oily skin, especially the Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel. I’ve emailed you details to redeem the Effaclar sample kit. Do let us know your feedback after trying the products!

Yes flaking sometimes occur when you use Effaclar M and Anthelios AC 30 SPF together. We have another range of sunscreen – Uvidea which you can use alternatively. You can try Uvidea XL 50 SPF Extreme Fluid which is recommended for people with oily skin. It has the same liquid texture as the one you’re using.

    Hi,

It been about one and a half weeks nows that I’m trying out the sample kit. I’m happy that I could see a significant reduce in oiliness in my face after using the foaming gel. And the pimples that juz came out were reduced by using EFFACLAR K, however I still see an uneven tone n slight shiny on my forehead. Some of my older pimples have not gone away.

I am using my own toner and Loreal UV Perfect SPF 50 sunblock, are this ok to go with LA ROCHE POSAY products particularly the ones used to reduce oiliness and get rid pimples?

    • December 7, 2009 4:27 pm

      Hi Elfa,

It’ll take some time for your skin to stabilize and achieve a more even skin tone. You may want to try Effaclar Duo if you often have breakouts on your face. Effaclar A.I. is an excellent pimple cream for spot treatment.

If you did not experience any discomfort with the products you’re currently using, they should probably work fine for you. But of course, I’ll recommend you to try our Anthelios range of sunscreen which has the highest level of UVA protection in the market.

Hi there, sorry but i have a few questions to ask :)

Currently using Effaclar range of products for 1 month and i can see vast improvement on my skin :)

Anyways, for sun protection, im using Anthelios spf 30 which u said doesn’t work with Effaclar M, so what sun block goes well with Effaclar M for the face before makeup application? Is it Uvidea XL 50 SPF Extreme Fluid? I do find Anthelios SPF 30 good as well, just that cant use it with Effaclar M but can use with other moisturiser.

Do u recommend any sunscreen products from la roche posay that can be used for the whole body? I want one that doesnt give sticky or oily feeling :)

One last question, what is the exact routine to use effaclar products? Cleanser, toner, Effaclar M and after that what abt Effaclar K n AI n daily renewal fluid? Hows the sequence like? And, i cant seem to find Effaclar toner anywhere i go, is it out of stock? I can only see the Hydraphase toner.. :(

Thanks for coming up with the magic of effaclar, loving it :)

    • December 11, 2009 9:47 am

      Hi Ren,

Great to hear that Effaclar works for you!

Yes Anthelios AC 30 SPF, though recommended for people with oily skin, tends to produce white flakes when used with Effaclar M. Hence, unless you opt for a different moisturizer (you can try Toleriane Fluide Soothing Protective Non-Oily Emulsion which has a light texture, similar to Effaclar M, suitable for people with combination/oily skin), I’ll recommend you to use Uvidea XL 50 SPF Extreme Fluid.

If you like a light sunscreen for the body (and since you’ve tried and like Anthelios AC 30 for the face), you can try Anthelios XL 50+ SPF Extreme Fluid (Body). This one comes in a big bottle (125ml) since it’s to be used on the body. Alternatively, you can try Anthelios XL 50+ SPF Lotion. Even though the body sunscreen can be used for both the face and body, some people may find it to be too oily for the face. The skin on the face and body is very different so I’d advise you to choose a face-specific sunscreen to be applied on the face.

Our recommended Effaclar regime is as follows: cleanser, toner, Effaclar K, Effaclar M. Effaclar A.I. is a spot treatment for pimples so it won’t be used on a daily basis. If you use it, apply it after the toner, then use Effaclar K and M on the unaffected areas of the face. Effaclar K is also known as Daily Renewal Fluid.

Effaclar Toner was OOS for a period of time. It should be back on the shelves so you may want to look out for it again.

If you experience frequent pimple breakouts on the face, you may want to give our new product, Effaclar Duo, a try too!

      Cheers,
      LRPSG

Hi there, it’s me again. Just one more question, for a perfect makeup application for acne-prone oily skin, what steps and products do you recommend from La Roche-Posay for the following:

Cleanser-toner-moisturiser-uvprotection-makeupbase.. Cleanser and toner is pretty obvious as to which products from the Effaclar range.. what about the last 3, please help.. It’s quite sad when we wear makeup it doesn’t last due to our oily skin :(

    • December 14, 2009 9:35 am

      Hi Ren,

You can try Effaclar M Active Matt Moisturizer which leaves your skin matt and cool after applying. As for sunscreen and makeup base, I’d recommend you to use Uvidea XL 50+ SPF Extreme Fluid which offers high UVA/UVB protection while at the same time acts as a perfect makeup base. This is a good choice if you do not want to apply too many products on your face.

For people with oily skin, the face will start getting oily in the middle of the day so when that happens, you can blot away the oil with an oil blotter or tissue paper. Be careful to do it gently so as not to clog up your pores with your makeup.

      Cheers,
      LRPSG

    Hi =)

I’ve been using Effaclar K for a week or so and I do see improvements to the clogged pores!

Is the new product Effaclar Duo something like Effaclar K but more targeted towards people who are more prone to outbreaks?

    Thanks =)

    • December 14, 2009 10:17 am

      Hi Amy,

Yes, Effaclar K shows results within a week for most people and I’m glad it works for you!

Effaclar Duo is recommended for people with congested skin and frequent outbreaks of pimples. It offers dual efficacy against both retentional (blackheads and whiteheads) and inflammatory acne (pimples). In short, it is similar to Effaclar K but the function goes beyond that. If your only problem is comedones, I’d advise you to stick with Effaclar K but if you experience frequent breakouts and inflammed skin, do give Effaclar Duo a try!

A toner really? So i shud jus apply it after cleanser, then use my effaclar M then my sun protection and go with my makeup? thanks anyway, love la roche-posay :)

    • December 15, 2009 9:40 am

      Hi Ren,

Yes Effaclar Clarifying Moisturizing Lotion is the new toner under the Effaclar range, replacing the old one. Do remember to shake before use and gently wipe over your face using a cotton pad. So the regime remains the same: cleanser, toner, moisturizer, sunscreen and makeup.

Hi I have received the sample. Thks. I tried the Effaclar M moisturiser and I liked it very much . It’s not oily at all and keep the face matte. As for Effaclar K have not seen any result yet instead my small pimple on the chin become bigger after applying. Is it the purging process? So for my clogged pores/whiteheads on the chin area, is it enough to just apply the Effaclar K? They will just go away on its own? Actually I think I have combination skin rather than oily skin with some fine lines (dehydration?) and clogged pores /pimples occasionally so can I still use Effaclar range . Is the hydraphase range suitable for me too? Thks.

      Hi Karen,

Yes, that’s the effect of Effaclar M – matt appearance, that’s why people with combination/oily skin like it.

It’s actually normal to experience new pimples (or in your case, pimples becoming bigger) when using Effaclar K because that’s part of the unclogging process. Continue the usage and you should see a more even texture after the pores are unclogged. You can apply Effaclar K only on your chin or nose areas where whiteheads and blackheads are commonly found.

If you have dehydrated skin, using Effaclar K may dry your skin further so it is necessary to apply moisturizer after that. For a more accurate diagnosis, I’d recommend you to approach our Derma-Advisors at the store counters because they can look at your skin and advise accordingly.

    Hi,
I was wondering if this range would work well for oily-combination skin which are blemish prone as well? If the sample trial kit is still available, I would like to try it out for myself. Thanks!

    • December 21, 2009 2:40 pm

      Hi Slj,

This range is recommended for people with combination-oily skin. If you’re prone to breakouts, you can try our new product, Effaclar Duo which offers a dual efficacy against comedones and inflammation.

I’ve emailed you a redemption flyer for an Effaclar sample kit. Give it a try and let us know your feedback!

Hi, I have oily skin with severe acne condition. I would like to know the difference between Effaclar Duo and Effaclar K/AI? For Effaclar Duo, do I apply on the whole face or just on the imperfections? What product would you recommend for lightening of scarring? Thanks.

    • December 30, 2009 11:01 am

      Hi Michelle,

Effaclar K is targetted at unclogging pores and removing comedones i.e. whiteheads and blackheads. It can a little drying so we usually advise customers to apply a moisturizer after Effaclar K.

Effaclar Duo is recommended for people with congested and inflammed skin condition (frequent pimple breakouts). It has moisturizing properties so you can apply in place of your usual moisturizer. Apply it over the entire face as you would a moisturizer.

Effaclar A.I. is a pimple cream. Apply it on your pimple as and when it is necessary.

For lightening of scars, you can try our whitening range, Mela-D White. However, it is highly advised that you treat your acne condition first before proceeding to whitening because combining too many products may not achieve the desired results.

I’ve emailed you a redemption flyer for the Effaclar sample kit. Do give it a try and let us know your feedback!

hi i find that the Effaclar K does not work very well for me. i have used it for 1-2 weeks on my chin area where it is prone to whiteheads an clogged pores, but there is not much improvement. the whiteheads are still there. can you advise?

    • December 30, 2009 11:04 am

      Hi Karen,

Do give it some time for the product to work. We advise customers to allow 4 weeks for the products to show some results because the skin renewal process takes 28 days. Furthermore, results usually vary from person to person.

      Cheers,

As much as I wanted to try the whole range of product, the promoter told me she is out of stocks for the samples and only gave me the daily renewal fluid.

It does a great job in reducing blackheads from my face and also calm down breakouts and minimise oil shines.

Would really love to try out more samples from this range.

hi can i checked if the clogged pores and whiteheads have cleared, do i still need to continue using the effaclar K on the affected area for maintenance or i can stop it and start using again when there are clogged pores recurring.

    • January 7, 2010 12:46 pm

You would be recommended to continue. Above all, it is key to perpetuate a suitable skincare regime in order to prevent your clogged pores and whiteheads from returning.

Effaclar K has a micro-exfoliating action that will enable daily renewal of your skin; keeping it clearer and softer.

    Hello Kristen,

I have run out of the sample kits for redemption. However, you can try going down to any one of our Guardian/Watson’s stores to look for our DA (Derma Advisor) on samples for Effaclar K.

Additionally, Effaclar Duo is recommended for people with congested and inflammed skin condition (frequent pimple breakouts). It has moisturizing properties so you can apply in place of your usual moisturizer. Apply it over the entire face as you would a moisturizer.

Hi, I saw from your international website that the Toleriane Teint range has a powder but it is not avaliable in Singapore. Will it be avaliable to Singapore soon? I have oily, acne-proned and sensitive skin. Would like to try that out for daily use. Thank you.

    • January 12, 2010 10:49 am

      Hi Mel,

Unfortunately we will not be bringing in the Toleriane Teint powder range. However, if you like, we do have the liquid foundation that has almost the same texture as the powder range. It is available at our selected counters.

Hi. I was thinking of trying Effaclar Duo as a daily moisturizer, and La Roche Posay Anthelios AC SPF 30 Fluide Extreme if I need be under the sun. So I want to hear your thoughts on this. Thank you.

    • January 12, 2010 10:43 am

      Hi Rosie,

The Effaclar range is mainly to control oiliness and unclog pores. Effaclar M and H are moisturizers that are primarily used to hydrate the face. Effaclar Duo, on the other hand, is used to treat (includes tightening pores, removing blackheads and correcting pimples) before the moisturizing function comes into place to hydrate the face after the treatment. Hence, my advice would be to check if your skin require this treatment. Otherwise, Effaclar M or H would serve just as well.

The Anthelios AC SPF 30 Fluide Extreme on the other hand, is suitable for application on top of your moisturizer.

To have a better understanding about your skin condition, you might like to visit our Derma Advisors (DA) for a free skin consultation.

Hi. Thanks for your speedy response. Will definitely give it a try. One question, will this combination produces white flakes too? Does LRP have a range of moisturizers with spf?

        • January 15, 2010 12:21 pm

          Hi Rosie,

So far we haven’t had feedback with regards to white flakes, but it really depends on the individual’s skin condition.

LRP Hydraphase moisturizer has an SPF15 sun-protecting effect.
